Terna’s sustainable year: a circular model for electricity grid development

Italian national electricity grid restructuring works, complex maintenance works and links abroad for Italy’s energy security. Over the course of 2018, numerous infrastructural works were carried out on the high-voltage and extra-high-voltage electricity grid. Sustainability, which for Terna also means listening to local areas and dialogue with the local communities and various stakeholders involved, is at the heart of the grid development strategy.

Bad weather emergency. In October, Terna’s work in the Triveneto area continued around the clock until the emergency had passed to ensure full operational functionality of the high voltage grid. In addition to activities in the field, Terna worked in constant contact with the Prefectures, local institutions and Civil Protection Department. Furthermore, the use of helicopters enabled the aerial inspection of 200 kilometres of power lines in a single day.

Removal of pylons. Replaced with underground (and therefore invisible) cables, the overhead power lines in the Milanese area of Media Valle del Lambro Park in Sesto San Giovanni, were demolished, making the electricity grid more sustainable in order to support the redevelopment of the Adriano quarter.

Cables in the Venetian Lagoon. In September, Terna completed the laying of undersea cables in the Venetian Lagoon area. A project carried out entirely with sustainable and innovative technologies, with the aim of further increasing the safety and reliability of the electricity system.

International interconnections. The  works for the creation of the Italy-France interconnection continued throughout the year. At 190 kilometres long (half in Italy and half in France), it will be the longest underground (and therefore invisible) DC cable in the world.

The storks’ nests. In February, Terna’s technicians climbed the pylons in the Cervara Oasis to help the storks located in the area. Circular platforms were installed on two pylons to help the storks build their nests and, at the same time, to secure the power line.

The birdlife project between Sicily and Calabria. 3 years of monitoring and 115 thousand overflights without a single collision. These are the first statistics on the overflights of migratory birds from North Africa to Northern Europe over the Strait of Messina. Terna installed a radar station in Sant'Eufemia d'Aspromonte in Calabria, to ensure that the new electricity connection between Sicily and Calabria doesn’t interfere with the migration routes of birdlife in the area. The most common species sighted along the Strait are the European honey buzzard and the black kite.
